Learn how to Dial-A-Ride in Custer Park

Colin Phillips, mobility manager at Access Will County Dial-a-Ride program, will meet with Custer Township residents on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at Custer Township Hall, 35332 Grant Ave., Custer Park.
Phillips will outline the program and accept registrations for the program.
Access Will County Dial-a-Ride is available to seniors, age 60 and older, and individuals with disabilities. The program offers access to destinations within Will County, one mile outside the county border, and parts of southern Cook County.

Freedom of speech can be a slippery slope

The Sept. 24 Braidwood City Council meeting raised the subject of First Amendment Rights at public forums.
In summary, the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution protects five fundamental freedoms, including freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of (peaceful) assembly, and freedom to petition.
Resident Nicole Shores approached the council with concerns about her right to Freedom of Speech being violated.

Day for being generous with Lions members

The Braidwood Lions Club will again be participating in the Annual Lions of Illinois Foundation Candy Day Fundraiser.
Club members and volunteers will be holding a canister collection day on Friday, Oct. 11, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the street corners of Rt.’s 113, 129 and 53 in Braidwood.

Custer solar project voted down by Will County Land Use

On Sept. 10, the Will County Land Use and Development Committee rejected a Special Use Permit for the 3,600-acre solar energy plant planned for Custer and Reed townships.
All five members of the committee voted unanimously to reject the special use permit, throwing a monkey wrench into plans for the solar energy plant.
In Nov., 2021, ACCIONA Energia presented a plan to construct a solar energy plant in Custer Township on farmland between Essex Road east to Ohlhues south of Illinois 113

Godley residents shouldn’t panic if they see a funny looking white van driving slowly down the street.
It’s just a vehicle collecting data that will hopefully lead to better streets.
The Village is working with the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) in determining the worst streets in the area and which can be rejuvenated for the least amount of money.
CMAP has contracted with AECOM and Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) for the road assessment and pavement management implementation for the Village of Godley.

Backups begin with Interstate 55 bridgework

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced that repairs to the bridge carrying Interstate 55 over the Des Plaines River, in Channahon, will begin, weather permitting this week.
To complete the work, the public should expect overnight and weekend lanes closures in both directions of I-55 approaching the bridge.

Doomed restaurant aids firefighting training

When it comes to being a firefighter you can never have enough training. Not only is there the risk of injury and death on the job, without training it’s far easier to fall, suffer burns. Training is a critical factor to mitigate the risks of a dangerous job and to improve effectiveness.
Yearly training is required, but this year the Braidwood Fire Protection District got the opportunity to test their skills in an actual commercial building rather than in a simulated situation.

Fighting solar energy plants means crossing swords with big developers

Last week, we shared the story of Mark and Grace Youle and Ed Dunn, who took on a corporation – and won – in an effort to prevent a solar energy plant from being built off Rivals Road in rural Wilmington. The trio won a battle against Renewable Properties of San Francisco, CA. In an unprecedented victory, the Will County Board unanimously voted against the solar plant. “We fought because if we hadn't, my family would have to endure an industrial plant for 36 years,” Mark Youle said.
