In today's world, people banding together to strike to change injustices is an accepted and common place thing. It was not always so. In 1877 men in Braidwood formed a union and struck for higher wages.
It resulted in chaos, violence and military intervention. However, that year there were people all over the country doing the same thing, and for about the same reason. Today we look at a bit of labor history.
In January of 1877 the quarry workers and owners in Joliet met to form a united front. Their complaint was against the Penitentiary.
