Car break-ins reported in Wilmington
With the holiday season on the horizon, and people need cash to buy gifts, expect thievery to begin in earnest.
There have been multiple reports of cars being broken into in Wilmington.
On the Wilmington IL Community Group, there were posts from residents who claim their car was broken into or may have been tampered with.
Jerine Nicole said her car was targeted. “I didn’t lock up,” she said. “They got a few bucks is all.”
Josie Russell was also a victim. “Yes, on Bremer Street,” she posted, “Left cigarette ash everywhere and took my change.”
Another group member claimed to have spotted someone around 12:30 a.m. allegedly, the individual was dressed in black and holding a flashlight.
“At this point, we have had two reports of burglary to motor vehicle, both in the area of Laurel and East streets,” Adam Zink, Wilmington police chief said.
According to Zink, the vehicles in question were all unlocked, and therefore, easily accessed.
“The victims believe the incidents occurred around 2 a.m.,” Zink said. “Both had valuables taken from the vehicles, including purses and a laptop.”
Zink said he has heard that other unlocked vehicles in the area had been rummaged through but no official reports had been made.
“We are currently investigating these crimes, and ask anyone with further information to call the police department,” Zink said “We also urge everyone to lock their vehicles and do not leave valuables inside.”
Avoiding break-ins
According to Nationwide Insurance, the police chief is absolutely right. The most effective way to avoid the first tip is a no-brainer. Lock your car.
“Car smash-and-grabbers don't normally take the vehicle itself,” Nationwide stated. “However, there is always the chance that a key on the dash or in the ignition may motive the more daring into auto theft.”
