County Executive Walsh will not see re-election

JOLIET – Will County Executive Larry Walsh announced today that he will not seek a fifth term as leader of one of the fastest growing counties in Illinois. Walsh, who has spent his entire adult life in public service, has decided to retire and spend more time with his wife, Irene, six children, and 20 grandchildren.

“I have been so blessed to have a role in and a front row seat to witness the tremendous growth of Will County” Walsh said. “Now I want the opportunity to watch my grandchildren grow up. Anyone in public service understands this is not a nine to five job. You must truly have your heart and soul focused to service in public office.”

Over the last few years, Walsh has been very open about his health issues, successfully battling prostate cancer and a reoccurrence of cancer more recently. However, he acknowledges taking care of his health is now his number one priority.

“After 50 years of continuous public service, I am announcing that I will not be a candidate on the 2020 election ballot,” said Walsh. “I am proud of the remarkable progress Will County has made over the last 14years and I am confident this momentum will not stop.”

Some of the highlights of Walsh’s career include a consistent strong cash reserve of 22 to 26 percent of the annual corporate fund, a continued balance of economic development with quality of life for residents, and the elevation of Will County as the largest inland port in North America due to its remarkable position in freight transportation on the global marketplace. Additionally, significant modernization of county facilities and technology are improving the efficiency and effectiveness of county government.

“I am truly proud and humbled by the longevity and dedication of Will County employees,” Walsh said. “None of these incredible achievements would have been possible without our employees. Our staff is second to none and will keep our county moving forward.”

Walsh will continue to fulfill his duties as county executive until his successor is chosen in the November 2020 election and sworn in December 2020.
