Martha Jane Miller

VERMONT, IL—Martha Jane Miller, 85, of Vermont, IL, passed away Friday, April 19, 2019 at the Joliet Area Community Hospice in Joliet. She was born Aug. 6, 1933 in Galesburg, IL, the daughter of Clifford C. "Eph" and Katherine F. (Whitney) Mercer. She married Fred Miller on July 29, 1956 in Vermont. He preceded her in death on June 30, 2014.
Martha was a 1951 graduate of VIT High School and a 1955 graduate of MacMurray College with a degree in business education. She taught school at Dunlap for one year. She then worked as a teller for the Bank Of Cicero for several years before working for the Vermont State Bank in Vermont, IL for over 20 years. She was an active member of the Chapter C PEO Sisterhood for over 64 years.
Martha and Fred enjoyed traveling and wintering in Florida. She enjoyed flower gardening and bird watching. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and her Golden Retrievers.
She is survived by three sons: Kenneth (Linda) Miller, of Coal City; Jeffrey Miller and Clifford (Charla) Miller, all of Vermont; three grandchildren: Michael (Caitlynne) Miller, Jason (Savanah Rea) Miller and Megan (Matthew) McIlvane and five great-grandchildren: Journie Miller, Winnsor Miller, Mason McIlvane, Bennett Miller, and Mila McIlvane and a special friend of the family, Dee Andreas.
Martha Jane was also preceded in death by her two brothers, Charles David and Whitney O. Mercer.
Services were held Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at the Vermont Christian Church. Tim Gilliland officiated. Interment was in the Vermont Cemetery.
Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria, IL was in charge of arrangements.
