Project progressing

Coal City Village Trustee Dave Spesia reports the South Broadway project is moving along well.
As noted in updates provided by the project engineer, Christopher B. Burke Engineering Ltd. (CBBEL), the contractor completed the storm sewer installation last week and that paved the way for Nicor Gas to return to complete some remaining utility work.
The gas company will begin service installations and retire the old gas lines once services are transferred, a process that is expected to wrap up prior to the end of June. CBBEL reports the utility contractor will notify residents and businesses where gas services may be interrupted.
Spesia, chairman of the town’s Streets and Alleys Committee, said D Construction is due to return the first week of July to begin road construction activities on the west of the street.
He further indicated construction near the Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail line could get an earlier than expected start. During the construction of that phase of the project, the rail crossing will be closed for an estimated six weeks and require motorists to utilize alternative routes.
The $4.5 million roadway reconstruction is being funded by a federal Surface Transportation Program grant the village obtained through the Will County Governmental League.
Construction is slated to continue through November.
