Coal City has a new Police sergeant

Coal City Police Chief Chris Harseim rose before the Village Board to recommend the appointment of Michael T. Imhof as sergeant.
“Officer Imhof has the skills and temperament to become our next Coal City Police sergeant. He is level headed, forward thinking, compassionate and hard working,” the chief said.
The Village Board agreed, without hesitation, approving Imhof’s promotion.
In taking the oath of office as the newest sergeant of the Coal City Police Department, Michael T. Imhof vowed to faithfully discharge the duties of his position to the best of his ability.

Street side parking prohibited when snow piles up

The villages of Coal City and Diamond have snow routes in place and failure to comply will find drivers digging into their wallets.

Winter weather has arrived and drivers should be aware of town rules when it comes to street side parking when the snow falls.

Municipal code prohibits street side parking, in both villages, when a roadway is being cleared of snow. Specifically, in the event of a two inch or more snowfall vehicles must be removed from streets in a timely manner.

Village sees 400% increase in home solar permits

The year 2023 was the year more Coal City residents took a strong interest in solar power.

The Coal City Building Department saw a 400% increase in issuing permits for home solar projects, resulting in approximately 35 homes now being power by the sun.

There were 12 permits issued for new residential installations, that’s up from three the year before and the most issued in a single year.

What if a bus carrying migrants bound for Chicago got off Interstate 55 at Highway 113 and left its passengers at one of Diamond’s two fuel stops. What would the village do?

It’s a scenario Village of Diamond Mayor Terry Kernc was preparing for on Friday as she spoke with Will County EMA officials, operators of the gas stations, the nearby Christian Life Assembly church and Hope for Help pantry in Coal City.

Village Board gives OK for new restaurant

Silver Dollar Restaurant Group is opening an eatery in Coal City.

Bimak, Inc., represented by Mony Iljazi, recently acquired the commercial property at 435 W. Division St., and plans to reopen the doors to the restaurant space that was previously LaPizza.

The Iljazi family, owners of a handful of other restaurants, will open the space under a new name and concept sometime in 2024.

According to its business plan, the restaurant group is “renowned for its commitment to quality ingredients, exceptional customer service and a vibrant atmosphere.”

New principal hired at Coal City Middle School

Coal City Middle School will have a new principal beginning with the 2024-2025 academic year.

The hiring of Cameron Stone as the next principal of the middle school was approved by the Coal City Community Unit 1 Board of Education at its meeting Dec. 6. He will succeed Travis Johnson who retires on June 30. Stone will begin his duties with the school district on July 1.

Illinois Department of Natural Resources fisheries biologists, with support from contracted commercial fishers and biologists from the Illinois River Biological Station, wrapped up a 10-day intensive harvest operation in the Starved Rock pool of the Illinois River, resulting in the removal of an astonishing 750,000 pounds of silver carp between Nov. 27 and Dec. 6.

This is the largest single removal effort IDNR has undertaken and is believed to be a record for freshwater harvest within the United States.

Like the royals that have come before them, King Jared and Queen Elaina are preparing for the upcoming holiday with a grand soiree and they will open the doors to the castle for the Coal City High School Madrigals 25th holiday performance.

Established in 1998, Madrigals is a unique program within the school's music department consisting of a select group of student vocalists who mainly perform 15th and 16th Century a cappella music.
