Hunting and the Kankakee River region have been partners for hundreds of years. Today we honor the opening of fall turkey season (October 21) with a story from Christmas Day, 1844 that took place near our neighbor, Kankakee. It is taken from Burt Burroughs book Legends and Tales of Homeland on the Kankakee.

This is the time of year when there is no doubt that we are living in an agricultural based economy, at least in Wesley Township. The grain trucks, the cloud of dust indicating bean harvesting, the sound of the corn drier, it's all part of life in Wesley. So today we look at a few stories from Wesley's agricultural history.
The first entry in my Wesley file concerning agriculture is from January 22, 1862, nine months after the Civil War began. Remember that sugar cane was grown exclusively in the south and in the West Indies. As a result sugar was scarce and of poor quality.

For months now, Statehouse types have been talking about whether there’s a need for a fall veto session this year. The session is scheduled to run the two weeks after the November election.
As one person put it, veto sessions are for things that the governor and legislators “have to do.”
But with no gubernatorial vetoes to deal with, is there anything that absolutely has to be done before the end of the year?

Listening to other people's voices is something we do day in and day out. One might think that nothing in that line has changed over the ages. But that's not true. Think about it. Many of the voices we hear during the day come from some device - the radio, TV, videos on our phone, CD's, DVD's, etc., etc. Set the way back machine to June 1878 when the only voices a person heard came from the mouths of real people.
