Breaking the Chain: Town Hall session filled with hope

The Wilmington Coalition for a Healthy Community will be hosting a Town Hall meeting on Monday, Aug. 11 at the Mar Theatre, 121 S. Main St.
Michael Menard, a Kankakee native and bestselling author, will be the keynote speaker. His memoir, "The Kite That Couldn't Fly" became an unexpected catalyst for trauma awareness, leading to his groundbreaking new book, "Greater Than Gravity: How Childhood Trauma is Pulling Down Humanity."

Narcan training provides chance to save lives

The opioid epidemic continues to prove deadly across the country.

According to figures released by the Centers for Disease Control in March, emergency room visits for opioid overdoses rose 30 percent in all parts of the country from July 2016 through September 2017.

Those overdoses include a 30 percent increase in cases of men, and a 24 percent increase for women. Most states saw overdoses increase by 30 percent on average, but it was a much worse story in the Midwest, with reported cases of overdoses up, on average, 70 percent.

Grant funds will help find treatment options for addicts

The Braidwood Police Department will have some extra cash in its coffers to help battle drug addiction, thanks to some grant money headed its way.

On Aug. 1, the department received word that it had been awarded $28,000, as part of a law enforcement led diversion/deflection program. The BPD applied for federal and state grant funds in May.
