The heat can’t stop these young football players

    They came ready to have some fun in the sun, as they kicked off the first of a two-week flag football camp at Wilmington High School.
    The camp, which was open to second through eighth grade athletes, ran from 10 a.m. to noon. While there was plenty of heat on the field, it wasn’t slowing the kids down.
    “They have been great with the temperature, granted it is really hot, and these kids are going 100 mph,” said Wildcat football coach Jeff Reents. “From my standpoint, especially for the first year, it has been an awesome experience.”

Former All-American attends Coaler wrestling camp

    The Coal City wrestling program strives to be the best, so it only made sense to bring in one of the best during the annual wrestling camp.
    Mike Mena, a four-time undefeated champion in Illinois and four-time All-American wrestler for the University of Iowa, was in attendance giving lessons to the younger athletes. Mena  was co-captain of the 1997 National Champion Hawkey team that set a tournament record in scoring.
    The camp ran from June 5-9, and was open to high schoolers and incoming grade schoolers.

    They are the miracle students, taking on a full list of responsibilities throughout their four years at the high school.
    Whether it be working hard in the classroom, dedicating themselves to improving at practice, or being ready to perform on game days, they are constantly pushing themselves.
    The Braidwood Journal is recognizing the top six senior student-athletes of the year, giving them credit for all of their hard work.
    Not only were these individuals chosen by their performances on the court or field, but also by their merits in the classroom.

    Student-athletes sometimes pay a price. There are sacrifices throughout their high school careers, but in the end, it can be worth it.
    Whether it be working hard in the classroom, dedicating themselves to improving at practice, or being ready to perform on game days, they are constantly pushing themselves.
    The Coal City Courant is recognizing the top eight senior student-athletes of the year, giving recognition for their hard work.

Smith signs with Judson University

    Reed-Custer varsity soccer player Koby Smith has committed to Judson University.
    Smith, son of Rick and Tammy Smith, will attend Judson in the fall planning to major in architecture.
    “Koby was a leader for sure,” said Reed-Custer coach Andy Gleixner. “I talked a lot about him on senior night and at our banquet. When you have a player who can be a coach on the field, that is how Koby is.

Walk-off single wins Coal City its first 3A Regional

    Those in attendance for Coal City’s Regional on Saturday were in for a defensive marathon, as the Coalers wound up clinching the 3A Regional Title 1-0 over Morris in extra innings.
    The win marks the program’s first 3A Regional Championship win, as the Coalers head to Ottawa on Wednesday at 5 p.m. to face Marian Catholic.

Reed-Custer, Wilmington have players named to All-Conference team

    The Interstate Eight Conference’s South Division for baseball and softball was littered with talent this year.
    That included players from Wilmington and Reed-Custer who received All-Conference honors last week.
Softball
    Wilmington and Reed-Custer both had players named All Conference.    
    The Lady Comets had their two senior pitchers, Kenna Wilkey and Mac Kenzie Collier selected.
    The Lady Wildcats’ Lorri Kucharski, a senior pitcher and first baseman was also named.

Coal City earns All-Conference honors in North Division

    Coal City’s softball and baseball programs came up big in the All-Conference selections this year, as both head coaches were named coaches of the year, and 10 players overall were selected in the North Division.
    Lady Coaler softball coach Stephanie Harmon wound up with Coaches of the Year honor, while Jerry McDowell was selected in baseball.
    For the softball team, senior second baseman Leah Campos, senior centerfielder Cali Caruso and senior catcher Abbey Spesia were given All-Conference honors.

Beecher routs Lady Comets in Sectional Championship

    It wasn’t the way that Reed-Custer’s varsity softball team wanted to see their season end, but on Saturday they suffered a 7-0 shutout loss to Beecher in the Sectional final.
    The Lady Comets had a couple of errors from the start, allowing Beecher to put base runners on and bring two of them home.
