It will still be a couple of weeks before it’s official, but the South Broadway reconstruction project has a contractor.
At a state bid letting in Springfield last week, the Illinois Department of Transportation opened bids for a number of projects across the state. The winning bid for Coal City’s project was submitted by D Construction.
The Coal City contractor’s price to complete the project was $4.6 million, under the engineer’s estimate of $5.4 million and just above the $4.5 million in federal Surface Transportation Program grant funds the village secured through the Will County Governmental League.
“It was a great bid,” said Matt Fritz, Coal City’s village administrator.
The reconstruction project is slated to commence in March and reach substantial completion by the end of the calendar year. Final landscaping elements will be wrapped up in spring 2020.
As outlined in previous reports the project includes a new roadway from Division Street to Park Street, including a center turn lane, bike lanes on the east and west side of the road and center median on the north and south sides of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad crossing, as well as upgraded infrastructure.
The design also includes a new streetscape with updated lighting, benches, bike racks, water fountains and trash receptacles.
Bids for the project were opened on Friday, Jan. 18, so Fritz said there is still a bit of work to be done, including verifying unit prices before the Village Board can take action to formally approve the bid and Fritz expects that to come at the board’s meeting on Feb. 13.
“It’s great that (the bid) came in under the estimate and we’re glad to see it go to the local contractor,” Fritz said.
