Miner overpower the Indians
Coal City Miners wrapped up the regular season on Sunday by defeating Sandwich at all four levels.
The Miners Superlights won 21-0 with some collective work on offense by quarterbacks Leo Rodriguez, Cooper Lardi and Cole Coleman. Lardi scored 2 touchdowns, one a 22-yard run and the other on a 65-yard kickoff return. Coleman added a touchdown on a 55-yard run.
Extra points were added by Mikey Tworek, Levi Hennessy and Adam Calderon. Oakley Parks, Nico Padovano and Ryder Delk assisted yardage. Defense dominated gang tackles allowing no yards. The Miners had several tackles for a loss by Hennessy, Tworek, Lardi, Calderon and Parks. Levi Hennessy also turned over a stripped ball from the quarterback to end the game.
The Miners Lightweights shutout Sandwich, 25-0. The Miners offense started the day’s scoring with a 50-yard QB scramble by Drake Figge.
Austin Newman contributed a lot of yards rushing leading to a touchdown. TJ “Choo Choo” Wagner dragged Sandwich around the turf and scored.
Fast Eddie Gergits capped off the scoring for the Miners with a 40 yard dodge-and-duck run right through the heart of the defense. TJ Wagner led the defense with multiple tackles for loss. Brady Loughran was key at corner, sealing the edge and breaking up pass attempts.
Mason Dixon came away with an interception after a pass attempt returning 20 yards to set up the offense. Cole Watson intercepted the Indians after making a diving catch. Dylan Rich, Brayden Plata, Mason Hurley and Kamden Martino stood up the offense line to hold Sandwich to less than 50 yards rushing. The Miners earned a bye on week 1 and are waiting to see their next opponent.
The Junior Varsity Miners defeated the Indians 24-6 to finish the regular season undefeated 7-0.
The defense played well and shut down Sandwich’s run game. Cooper Winke had a long run saving tackle at the half to keep Sandwich out of the endzone. Defensive tackles Blake Jones and Cody Allen limited Sandwich’s yard from the constant pressure.
Our offense was firing on all cylinders and got off to a quick start. Brantley Brooks and Carter Thill blocked well and helped get our three touchdowns. Touchdowns scored by Bryson Male, John Viano, and Zackary Babcock. Easton Horath also ran the ball well.
Ryder Schoenwald went 3 for 3 on extra points snapped from William Teague and held by Bainen Durkee. We look forward to having the time to work on things during our bye week and making a push in the playoffs.
The Varsity Miners downed Sandwich 27-6 to improve their record to 6-1 and a top-seed bye the first week of the playoffs.
QB/Safety Maddox Meents stole the show by opening the game with a 80 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Meents also added 2 rushing touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Kicker Spencer Vaira split the uprights for the team’s first field goal at 30 yards.
The Varsity Miners celebrated the 8th grade players in front of their home crowd. Special shout outs to the Heisman winners: Jaxen Shimp, Maddox Meents, Ryder Gill, Connor Rodriguez, Parker Murphey, Frank Roehr, Kaden Brown and Noah Grant.
