Don’t worry students, summer break is less than two months away now that an official last day of school has been set.
At its meeting last week, the Unit 1 Board of Education announced that Friday, May 31, will be the last day of school for students. Teachers and staff will report the following  Monday, June 3, for a teacher institute day.
The state of Illinois currently requires public schools to complete 174 instructional days, so each year the district builds a 179-day calendar. The five extra days are there for incidents that force schools to close. This year the district utilized three emergency days due to weather conditions, so the end of the school year was pushed back from May 28  to May 31.
Last month the board set the dates for high school commencement and middle school promotion. The Coal City High School class of 2019 will receive diplomas at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 19; the middle school eighth grade class will be recognized at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 30. Both ceremonies will be held in the competition gymnasium at Coal City High School.
Classes for the 2019-2020 school year begin Thursday, Aug. 15.
