The Wilmington Park District is hosting a community forum at 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 10 to allow residents to share thoughts, ideas and priorities.
According to Amy Schmucker, Business Operations and Human Resources at Wilmington Park District, the forum services as a platform for open dialogue, collaboration and community engagement .
“We want to know exactly what types of activities residents are interested in,” Schmucker said.

Park upgrades set to break ground in Spring 2024

Children’s Memorial Park in Northcrest is set for some upgrades in 2024.

But, the final details on just what those upgrades will ultimately include still have a few months before they are finalized, as the Wilmington Park District waits to hear from the state about some potential grant funding that could give the project a boost.

Wilmington Park District appoints two new commissioners

The Wilmington Park District has a full board of directors once again.

During the April 4 consolidated election, only two candidates ran for four open seats. Katie Francis and Norm Weck, both of whom had been serving on the board as appointees, each earned 4-year terms following the election. Another 4-year term was left unfilled, as well as a 2-year unexpired term.

The board’s fifth seat is held by Pat Nugent, who still has two years left in his current term.

On May 25, those two vacant seats were filled by appointment during the regular meeting of the board.

Wilmington Park District plans survey at Children’s Memorial Park

The members of the Wilmington Park District are making plans to get a survey completed at the park in Northcrest, as summertime maintenance and planning for upgrades at the site have led to some questions about where exactly the property line lies.

The board discussed the issue at their regular monthly meeting on Thursday, April 27.

The issue was brought to the attention of the commissioners out of worries of intruding on neighbors who back up to the park property while working on new installations at Children’s Memorial Park.

Wilmington Park District continues to grow

The Wilmington Park District has made some big changes over the past two years, first with the hire of Wilmington native Kirsten VanDuyne as Executive Director, then with new members voted in or appointed.

The new leadership has spearheaded a lot of changes for the district in that time, changes that have been well received by members of the community as offerings and events have drastically increased, especially after pandemic restrictions were relaxed.

Park changes on the horizon at Children’s Memorial in Wilmington

An effort to increase amenities at Children’s Memorial Park in Northcrest continues to progress, thanks to donations, collaborations, and an active effort on behalf of the Wilmington Park District to create an inclusive space for residents.

Wilmington Park District Executive Director Kirsten Van Duyne said the plans to upgrade the park are still in the initial phase, but things are moving along, including plans to add a 1,000 foot U-shaped accessible asphalt walking path with a story walk around the perimeter of the park.

Wilmington Park District has big plans for Catfish Days

The Wilmington Park District will play a big role in this year’s Catfish Days festival, planning four days of events for the entire family, and some for a big cause.

Catfish Days “Goes to Vegas” is the theme for 2022.

The park district will help kick off the event with a farmer’s market on Thursday at the Water Street Fitness facility from 4-8 p.m.

On Friday, the park district makes their way over to the South Island, where fun for kids and adults kicks off at 4 p.m.

An effort to develop Children’s Memorial Park to add more amenities is underway at the Wilmington Park District.

The park district board of directors held a brief discussion on potential plans to increase the potential of the park this spring.

Park district executive director Kirsten Van Duyne said ideas to make the space more inviting range from additional playground equipment to a paved path that can be used by all visitors to the park.

A small but creative effort is underway by members of the Wilmington Park District, to make the Water Street Fitness facility look a little more welcoming on the outside.

Park district executive director Kirsten Van Duyne told members of the board of commissioners in April that she was looking into ways to make the building a little more visually appealing.

Bags to Benches program earns Wilmington Park District a place to sit

When Wilmington Park District Executive Director Kirsten Van Duyne told the park board last fall that a new recycling program was underway, she had no idea just how quickly the endeavor would produce results.

In April, thanks to a massive effort put forward by the Wilmington community, the park district earned its first “reward” from participating in the program: A brand new place for folks to sit and relax.
